Visiting Outer Banks, North Carolina in the Fall

Outer Banks, North Carolina

How do you know when itโ€™s fall in the OBX? When the license plate colors begin to change ๐Ÿ™‚

The sun may have set on summer, but when it comes to fall – there’s no question it’s our favorite time of the year to visit this The Outer Banks! Fall in The Outer Banks features everything we love about OBX in the summer, but with so many advantages! Bonfires on the beach & all the fresh oysters you can eat, there’s no way around it – fall is fantastic in The Outer Banks Here are just a few of our favorites to help you fall in love with The Outer Banks:

The Weather is Sublime

The ocean water is still endless shades of blue and warm enough to have a blast in.  During our last October visit, the ocean water temperature was still above 80ยฐ. The weather in general during the fall months in The Outer Banks also consists of more mild temperatures overall and the early mornings bring along a cool crisp ocean breeze that disappears by mid-morning.

The cooler temps make this the perfect time of the year for outdoor activities like walking, biking, and running. One of our favorite things to do is to hook-up our bike trolleys and bring our pups along for a scenic ride through the many neighborhoods of The Outer Banks.

However, that’s not the end to the outdoor fun in OBX. Yoga on The Green is offered in Duck Town Park Tuesdays in Duck, and Stand-Up Paddleboard Yoga is offered Tuesdays & Thursdays in Ocracoke.

In September, the weather still averages around 80ยฐ, but in October is when it drops down to a comfortable average high of 73ยฐ. As a result, the air temps are cool enough that our Labrador Retriever can hang for hours in the sun without getting overheated. Do yourself a favor, dig your toes into the sand, grab a good book, a cold beverage & park yourself under your beach umbrella to enjoy the perfect afternoon in The Outer Banks!

Crowd-free Beaches & Roads

Summer is by far the busiest time of the year in OBX. School is out, and the beaches are packed with families enjoying some much-needed R&R. However, that’s not the case in the fall. The lower crowds bring along a feeling of having miles of beautiful Carolina beaches all to ourselves! Sure, there are plenty of others enjoying the beaches as well, but beach goers are more spread out and generally more laid back as we enjoy fuller days in the sun thanks to the cooler temps. With less crowds, a slower pace, cooler temps, and some great off season rates on beach rentals from Ocracoke to Carova.

You’ll also find it so much easier to get around, making it even easier for you to explore all The Outer Banks has to offer. There are only a few “main roads” in OBX, so coming and going from one spot to the next can be a challenge during peak season. However, this time of year, anything is possible & the pet & family-friendly options are endless. History, culture, outdoor adventures & so much more, The Outer Banks has something for everyone in the fall. From museums, lighthouses and beaches to shopping, dining, bird watching, hiking, butterfly houses, breweries, movie theaters, state parks, & pristine golf courses, everything has a more laid-back & welcoming vibe to it now that the height of the summer season has finally come to a close. Our favorite restaurants are walk-ins and don’t even take reservations in the off-season. We truly enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of fall in OBX.

Affordable Rentals

Saving money on vacation is no joke, and the more affordable fall rates are certainly something that attracts us to fall in The Outer Banks. Beachfront homes that would never have even been on our radar during peak season are suddenly more affordable and within our budget. Do yourself a favor and spring for the oceanfront home with a private pool!

Travel Tip: Pay attention to the fine details for your home’s amenities when planning your trip

Ideal Fishing Conditions

If you like to fish, this is the time to do it. The crowds of fisherman you would see during the summer months are gone. Fish from the beachfront, from the water, or from one of The Outer Banks popular Fishing Piers in including Avon, Rodanthe, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and three in Nags Head. Here, you will enjoy ideal water conditions during fall in OBX.

Travel Tip: Don’t miss the Nags Head Surf Fishing Tournament annually in October

Custom Rod Building classes are also available during the fall season at OBX on the Fly in Manteo. Many of the locals we have met over the years share with us their tips on where to find the best fish, and trust us – there are a lot in the area (from tuna and mahi to marlin), but we have yet to experience this while visiting. We hope to add this to a future visit, and if you’ve fished in OBX – please let us know your tips down below!

Celebrate Spooky Season

If you haven’t already guessed, we love fall in The Outer Banks and make no mistake, OBX doesn’t disappoint with their Halloween festivities. Nicknamed the Graveyard of the Atlantic, there is no better place to enjoy all the Halloween offerings. From hayrides, beach bonfires, trick-or-treating, parades and pumpkin patches to Ghost & History tours in Ocracoke, The Outer Banks has everything you need for the perfect Halloween getaway. Oh, and don’t forget “Black Beard’s Pirate Jamboree” in Ocracoke and “Ghost Crabs” on the beach!

Evenings in the Outer Banks

The Outer Banks comes alive on fall evenings thanks to many local restaurants and bars offering live music & entertainment. Some of our favorites are The Tap Shack in Duck and Outer Banks Brewing Station in Kill Devil Hills. The evening air is crisp, and The Tap Shack is pet-friendly, so our pups can tag along too!

Spectacular Sunrises & Sunsets

We certainly can’t highlight fall in The Outer Banks without mentioning those fall sunrises & sunsets. Sunrises and sunsets in the Outer Banks are unreal, and we can never get enough cool morning runs & walks on the beach or evenings on the deck of our beachfront cottage. Enjoy a sunset or sunrise throughout OBX – from your cottage, high a top a lighthouse, at dinner on the waterfront, on the Hatteras or Duck Boardwalk, on the ocean, or from the beach itself!

We’ve even been fortunate enough a few times to visit during a full moon. Those walks on the beach during the full moon are something we’ll never forget! However, the best way to experience an Outer Banks sunset is with a sunset cruise on the open water. There are several tour operators who offer these through October, and it’s something we’ve always wanted to do.

Disclosure: Hurricane Season

One thing to note, visiting The Outer Banks in October may be the off-season for crowds and that hot summer weather, but as a reminder, it is still hurricane season. In 2022, we were staying in Corolla Light Resort when the bands from Hurricane Ian hit the area. The hurricane itself did not hit the Outer Banks. Luckily, the area fell outside the storm’s direct path. However, we did experience high winds & heavy rain. As a result, a lot of the main roads were flooded, and the beaches were inaccessible thanks to storm surges & rough surf. We were in Corolla for 7 days, and three of those days we we spent hunkering down in our pet-friendly rental playing board games and cooking delicious meals as a family in our well-equipped kitchen. The rest of our stay was purse sunshine!

The most difficult part of our Hurricane Ian experience was carrying our two senior-dogs ages 14 and 16 down three flights of stairs from our three-story home to go to the bathroom in very high winds. Needless to say it was not an ideal situation for us or for them, but we were all very lucky to be safe, and we still had a great time being together. In all the years Jared has been coming to the Outer Banks (30+), as both a home-owner and a visitor to the area, this was the first time he’d ever experienced a storm like this. We share our experience so you can manage your expectations when planning your trip, and we highly recommend you purchase travelers insurance so that you are able to recoup your funds should an emergency evacuation or cancellation occur.
