1-Day in Tortola, British Virgin Islands: Road Town Cruise Port Guide

Tortola, British Virgin Islands

๐Ÿ“ Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands

The best part of our 7-Day Southern Caribbean Norwegian Cruise Line itinerary ( …besides waking up in a different port every day) is the amount of time we had in each port.  We arrived in Tortola early at 7:00 a.m. & left late, giving us plenty of time to soak up all BVI had to offer!

As a result, now that our morning excursion in Virgin Gorda with Norwegian was out of the way & we were back in port before 12:00 p.m., we were on our own to explore Tortola until our “All Aboard” time of 5:30 p.m. We loved being able to explore small bits of two islands (Virgin Gorda & Tortola) in one day!

A few highlights from our time spent on Tortola, the largest island in the BVI:

Tortola Pier Park

The first thing youโ€™ll see when you set foot on land is a massive cruise complex home to 50+ shops & restaurants. The pier was bustling both morning and night, and they have a very helpful way of organizing excursions by both land and boat. This made it super easy & convenient earlier in the morning when we set off on our excursion.

The Pier Park area is very nicely done. However, it is home to the usual Caribbean chain stores, so truth be told – we didn’t spend a lot of time here.  Do yourself a favor & stretch those cruise ship legs while in port by exploring the very safe & walkable surrounding town outside of Pier Park for more unique & authentic British Virgin Islands merchandise & cuisine.

Road Town

We spent the afternoon exploring the capital of the British Virgin Islands, Road Town. This well-situated port is home to an abundance of hotels, shopping, dining, culture as well as government administration buildings. We were told by many of the locals that this is the most populated area in BVI, and it shows!

The charming town hugs the Harbour but also the surrounding hillsides all with spectacular oceanfront views. Be sure to visit the waterfront market & grab a few hand-crafted souvenirs.

Main Street Restaurant BVI

While exploring the heart of Road Town, we stumbled upon @mainstreetrestaurantbvi where we had a delightful lunch al fresco. They offer both indoor and outdoor dining at Main Street, but if you know us at all – we can never turn down a chance to dine outdoors!

Travel Tip: Don’t Sleep on the Daily Specials, but definitely try the Oxtail Tacos, they’re TDF!

Food & drinks were fabulous (they have a huge variety) & we loved sitting on the outdoor patio & listening to the live music from the street below. this spot is definitely worth the 15 minute walk from port & not to be missed

Queen Elizabeth II National Park

After lunch, we walked down Waterfront Drive to Queen Elizabeth II National Park, a very nice park with public restrooms, benches, a playground, covered picnic areas with shade & a picturesque view of Road Harbour.

This is a great spot to watch the sunrise or sunset over the Harbour & we spent some time watching the sea turtles swim offshore. We even saw some free-roaming chickens while we were visiting.  This is a great spot to capture a photo of all the cruise ships in port that day as well as the famous โ€œTortolaโ€ sign.

It took us under 15 minutes to walk back to the ship from Queen Elizabeth II National Park where a rainbow welcomed us back onboard Norwegian V!VA, and we spent the rest of the afternoon on the Deck 8 “Oceanwalk” Promenade daybeds at “Infinity Beach.”

Thank you Norwegian Cruise Line for a lovely port day in the British Virgin Islands. We had an absolutely amazing first visit to BVI! Same time next year โœŒ๏ธ
